Top 10 Cat-Captivated Comedians

Top 10 Cat-Captivated Comedians

By: Sarah Beauchemin

If it’s been said once, it’s been said a million times: Cats have won the internet. This is a fact, and cannot be disputed. Thousands of hilarious cat videos and memes are shared every hour around the world, giving us a delightful break in our otherwise hectic days.

But what is it about cats specifically, more than other animals, that has captured the unwavering admiration of popular culture? Experts say it’s the comedic factor. Tom Cox, author of Under the Paw - Confessions of a Cat Man, explains that "Cats have a combination of incredible dignity, but also comedy about them. Cats can be so ridiculously pleased with themselves — and you don't get that with dogs. Because they are so proud and so aware of that dignity, when it is punctured it's the funniest thing in the world.

Think cats tumbling into bathtubs, getting stuck in cardboard boxes, or frantically chasing a red dot.  None of them dignified. All of them side-splitting.

So is it any surprise that some of the most notable comedians in modern history are cat-captivated just like the rest of us? We didn’t think so!

1) Ricky Gervais

This uproarious Brit tops our list of cat loving comedians. He’s shamelessly obsessed with his cat, Ollie, and his social media pages are rife with giddy pictures and videos of him doting on her. But Ricky gets major props for another reason - he’s a staunch animal rights supporter and uses social media as a platform to raise awareness about rescue adoption for all animals, not just cats. Right on, Ricky!

2) Russell Brand

Eccentric funny guy Russell Brand adores his cat, Morrissey, named after the singer of the Britpop band The Smiths (who also adores cats, FTW!). Russell debuted his very own cat video to the world on Ellen last year, which showed him unabashedly cooing to his furry BFF.

3) Steve Martin

Don’t let the dark hair fool you...that is, in fact, comedy veteran Steve Martin cradling his plump, happy cat. One of the cat-loving funny man’s classic jokes is “I gave my cat a bath the other day. They love it. He sat there, he enjoyed it, it was fun for me. The fur would stick to my tongue, but other than that…”

4) Jay Leno

Russell Brand’s not the only one who flaunted his feline love on Ellen. Tonight Show veteran Jay Leno also shared his own personal cat video with the world, which he claims proves cats are smarter than dogs! But Jay’s love for felines runs even deeper. Last December, he planned a “Kitten Cafe” surprise holiday party for his wife Mavis, wherein guests could bond with adoptable cats and give the best gift of all...a permanent, loving home to some cats in need. Best. Party. Ever.

5) Whoopi Goldberg

Several years ago, this witty comedienne rescued Verrazano (nicknamed “Vinny”), a Russian Blue kitten, from NYC’s Animal Care & Control. He’s named after the NYC bridge on which he was tossed out from a car window by a despicable person committing an incomprehensible act of cruelty. Check out Whoopi’s home video of Vinny in all his (now) safe glory!

6) Ellen Degeneres

Just in case you hadn’t picked up on it yet, Ellen is bananas over cats. In fact, she just wrapped up her show’s 5th Annual Cat Week, her version of The Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week,” which honors her most favorite animal in the universe. ‘Nuff said!

7) Jon Hamm

OK, so Mad Men’s Don Draper isn’t exactly a barrel of laughs, but actor Jon Hamm is known for “Hamm-ing it up” quite a bit in real life. In addition to performing stunts like photo bombing tourists atop the Empire State Building with Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, he recently appeared on Comedy Central’s @Midnight, absolutely out of his mind about his adoration for cats. Stop whatever you’re doing and watch now.

8) Buster Keaton

American vaudeville and silent film legend Buster Keaton adored cats. His veneration for felines is rumored to be in part due to their astonishing strength, agility, and grace. Of his career, largely rooted in stunts and acts of physical comedy, Buster said, “I would have been killed if I hadn’t been able to land like a cat.”

9) Stephen Colbert

Why, yes, that is Stephen Colbert reading an issue of Cat Fancy at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. And it’s not ironic. He just loves cats that much. For example, in August 2013, Stephen dedicated a segment of The Colbert Report to deriding Joe Lhota, the only NYC mayoral candidate who didn’t support a temporary shutdown of the Brooklyn subway line to rescue two kittens that were seen hiding under the tracks. You rock, Colbert!

10) Mark Twain

The great American humorist, known for his bottomless well of quips and witticisms, was a huge feline-phile. One of his most notable quotes was “When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade without further introduction.” And an 1894 entry in his notebook proclaimed “Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat.” Sublimely put.
